Maritime Affairs and Fisheries

This Commission department is responsible for EU policy on maritime affairs and fisheries. 

Responsibilities

The mission of the Directorate-General for Maritime Affairs and Fisheries (DG MARE) is to ensure a healthy ocean, sustainable fisheries, a thriving sustainable blue economy and vibrant coastal communities across Europe. It develops, implements, and evaluates the common fisheries policy, which contributes to Europe’s food security. It leads a coordinated approach to all ocean-related policies in the Commission. This includes a comprehensive agenda for marine knowledge, research, innovation and investment.
