Managing Director, Mussella

Speaker Bio

The third generation shellfish farmer from South of Brittany in France, Axel Briere started his career as a partner to his family business BRIERE MULTICULTURE, a mussels farming company. In 2016, Axel and other fellow mussels farmers founded Mussella, whose mission is to valorise undersized mussels within the agri-seafood sector. Axel is currently the Managing Director of Mussella, while he is also President of the shellfish farming union of Bay of Vilaine (since 2015) as well as Secretary of the national Bouchot farmers union (since 2018).
Subsequent to his Swiss studies, Axel developed his mindset about the robustness of investments in the long run in order to prevent waste. His company Mussella is the answer to seafood waste. The team is committed to limit the waste of their URM (Unmined Raw Materials), but to also go one step further and create a link between their URM (produce that will not be commercialized) with the needs of the agri-seafood sector. Similar to the case of undersized mussels, it is common that farmers throw their URM back to the sea, which has a huge impact on environment, at the same time leaving no other option to the agri-seafood sector actors than to import seafood from other seafood industry farmers around the world. Mussella wishes to be part of the international effort and process to transform the existing production and consumption model into a far more sustainable one.
